Joe writes: The
song was recorded in 1985 as part of a project to record the songs and stories
of the local people before they all disappeared. The man in the video is Paddy Nolan from near
Templemore. I am not sure if he is still alive.
According to a book The Spirit of Tipperary, Anon, Guardian
1930, the ballad was written between 1870 and 1880 “when Woodcock Carden of
Barnane was at the height of his tyrannical power,” but may refer to Templemore rather than
Barnane. It was written by Rev. Timothy
Corcoran (1857-1928) and appears in full in my book Carden of Barnane, almost
exactly as sung by Paddy Nolan.
